Tom Sachs, renowned for his ironic sculptures, has shaped the American collective imagination by blending symbols of mass cul- ture with those of American wealth. His works are a caustic parody of unchecked con- sumerism, the relentless pursuit of luxury goods, and the aggres- sion associated with contempo- rary society.
Sachs ironically reinterprets objects such as police pistols, sym- bols of control and repression, crafting models in reassuring col- ors and signing them with the mark of a famous jeweler. Even items like trays with hamburgers and fries ostentatiously display fashion labels.
He reconstructs weapons, military vehicles, and other objects that represent the exploitation of human labor, power, violence, and control. In 2006, Angelino Artworks col- laborated with Sachs to create “Balaenoptera Musculus,” a 1:1 scale reproduction of a blue whale, successfully exhibited in Milan at the Fondazione Prada.
