Born from Mercatone Uno’s international competition in memory of Marco Pantani, Biglia is a monument dedicated to the late cyclist conceived by Alessandra Andrini in collaboration with Marco Della Torre for the technical project.
The significant dimensions of the 4m diameter sphere influence execution methods and material selection.
The transparent hemisphere comprises seven thermoformed polymethyl methacrylate segments, fused and connected to a central lens.
The opaque hemisphere is crafted from expanded PVC and fiberglass, supported by a steel framework and finished with red automotive paint. An accessible panel, secured with industrial magnets, facilitates inspection and maintenance.
Within the marble, Pantani’s image is on a heat-sensitive translucent canvas, supported by a rotatable aluminum frame. Backlit by dimmable fluorescent lights, external lighting is provided by spotlights. An internal dehumidification system prevents condensation.
Positioned on an artificial elevation, the artwork maximizes visibility for passing motorists.
