In 2016, Hamra Abbas approached us to collaborate on a new project: “Gifts for Bakarah”. The origins of this project date back to 2012 when the artist embarked on the Umrah pilgrimage. During her trip, she stumbled upon the Bakarah Gifts shop in Medina, which served as the inspiration for a new series of large sculptures, with the first one crafted by us.
The series explores the intersection between commerce and devotion, religious sentiment and mundanity.
Our goal was to create a monumental representation of a water bottle used by pilgrims to carry holy water.
The use of fiberglass allowed us to capture all the intricate details of the decorations.
The final result is displayed at the American Embassy in Islamabad.
