Vik Muniz’s Mnemonic Vehicle series stands as a life-sized sculpture, replicating the iconic Matchbox toy car and marking Muniz’s return to the sculptural focus of his early career. This project delves into the dimensions of memory, desire and scale.
The process began when the art publisher Beyer Projects, reached out to us to assist on their project with Muniz, who had amassed a collection of vintage Matchbox cars and wanted to enlarge them to capture every imperfection, scratch and chip. Employing state-of-the-art techniques from the automotive prototyping industry, the sculptures were meticulously crafted using these detailed digital files. These lifelike ‘cars’ engage in a dialogue of universal desire and desirability, exploring notions of masculinity and the pursuit of prosperity.
This collection serves as a cornerstone for a narrative that delves into the essence of our captivation with mnemonic devices. These artifacts act as reminders of childhood joys and the fleeting instances of satisfaction, power, speed and control that linger in our memories.
As a former car model company, this project was a dive into the past and a task well within our expertise.
