“Needle, Thread and Knot” is a public artwork designed by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje Van Bruggen in 1999 and unveiled to the public in February 2000.
The title is self-explanatory: a large needle pierces the ground while its thread runs through the street, culminating in a substantial knot emerging from a fountain on the opposite side of the street. The piece was commissioned by the city of Milan in conjunction with the renovation of Cadorna Station. It can be interpreted as a symbol of various elements: the metro and train station beneath it, as well as a representation of the city of Milan and its significant contribution to the world of fashion.
