“Oneness”, initially exhibited at Deitch Projects, New York, in 2003, comprises a group of six alien sculptures made from soft, skin-like material. These sculptures, holding hands in a circle, are sensitive to human touch and illuminate when hugged.
Mariko Mori’s work blends spirituality, photography and fashion, incorporating cutting-edge technology trends. The design of Oneness merges advanced technology with a mystic and UFO-inspired aesthetic.
Originally conceived as an introductory installation for Wave UFO, Oneness evolved into a stand-alone artwork.
The six anthropomorphic alien figures, over a meter tall, invite viewer interaction. Uniform in grayish-blue color, they form a circle, holding hands and symbolizing interconnectedness. Viewers are encouraged not only to touch but also to embrace the sculptures, triggering the illumination of the aliens’ eyes and a simulated heartbeat.
Simultaneously hugging all six activates the base’s LED lights, symbolizing universal harmony achieved through collective unity.
